Frequently Asked Questions - Crystal Clear Ear Wax Removal in St Helens
What Methods Of Removal Can Be Used?
Wax removal using micro-suction.
Micro-suction is a system which effectively uses a vacuum to clear out any debris or wax from the ear canal. In the procedure of micro-suction a fine suction tube is gently inserted into the ear canal while being viewed closely through magnifying Loupe headsets.

Wax removal using water irrigation.
Water is an effective method to remove debris or wax in cases of a healthy canal and intact ear drum. The ProPulse water irrigator unit is CE-marked and has been designed specifically for wax removal. With this unit, a low pressure pulse of water is aimed in the ear to flush out the ear canal. The water is no warmer than body temperature (37℃).

Removal of wax deposits using various instruments
There are instruments with various tips designed for gentle removal of wax close to the ear canal entrance. In this procedure, the instruments are carefully inserted into the ear canal to clear the debris of wax.
Is Ear Wax Removal Safe?
As with any medical procedure, there are some potential side effects associated with ear wax removal but overall, it is considered a safe procedure. All ear wax removal procedures are carried out by a trained professional to ensure that they are as safe as possible.
Is There Any Aftercare Advice To Follow?
Yes but only with irrigation, keep them dry for a few days, as the protective wax layer has been removed. To keep the ears dry when you are washing your hair, place cotton wool which has been coated in petroleum jelly (Vaseline) into the outside of the ear (not in the ear canal).
Does Ear Wax Removal Hurt?
While impacted ear wax can cause swelling and irritation, the removal process itself is not painful. Although you may feel a weird sensation depending on the method of ear wax removal that you choose, there is no pain associated with any of the procedures.
Can Ear Wax Removal Improve Hearing?
Yes and no. Although ear wax removal can’t actually improve your hearing, it can eliminate any hearing issues caused by impacted ear wax. However, ear wax removal can’t improve the symptoms of any preexisting hearing conditions. Even so, if you have noticed a difference in your hearing lately, it’s worth booking a hearing test to check if the cause of your hearing loss is due to a buildup of ear wax, or something more serious.
How Do I Prepare For My Appointment?
Before your appointment, you should help to soften the wax by putting ear drops or olive oil into your ears twice a day.
Simply tilt your head or lie on one side and drip the oil or drops into your ear. Stay there for 5 minutes to help the oil soak into the wax.
Do the same on the other side. Repeat this for at least 3 days before your appointment.
It is recommend booking at least 3-4 days in advance to secure your space and give you enough time to apply the oil drops before you visit the clinic.
